- Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) IBM द्वारा 1970 के दशक में इसके binary synchronous protocol के replacement के रूप में developed एक transmission protocol है।
- SDLC network communication के Open System Interconnection (OSI) model की layers 2 के बराबर है। Protocol का यह layer सुनिश्चित करता है कि data units सही गति से एक network point से अगले flow तक successfully पहुंचती हैं।
- SDLC communication के primary और secondary station model का उपयोग करता है IBM mainframe network में, host mainframe primary station है और workstation और अन्य devices secondary station हैं।
- प्रत्येक secondary station का अपना address होता है। आमतौर पर, एक multipoint या multidrop व्यवस्था के रूप में जानी जाने वाली एक common line से जुड़ी कई device या secondary station है। SDLC का उपयोग point-to-point communication के लिए भी किया जा सकता है।

- Controls:- Control features के तीन अलग-अलग formats हैं:
- Information frame controls:– Information frame उस sequence को control करता है जिसमें frame भेजे जा रहे हैं और frame को numbering करते हैं। ऐसा करने से यह एक tab रख सकता है कि कौन सा users पहले प्राप्त करता है और जिसे पहले processed करने की आवश्यकता होती है। Primary और secondary की immediate response की जांच करने के लिए एक दूसरे के साथ communication करते हैं।
- Supervisory frame:– Supervisory frame control के बारे में information प्रदान करता है, हालांकि इसमें information field नहीं होता है, जब यह information frame प्राप्त करता है तो यह receives करता है और receipts भेजता है।
- Unnumbered frames:-Unnumbered वाले frame sequence में नहीं होते हैं और इनमें कोई number नहीं होती है। इन frames का उपयोग secondary frames को initialize करने के लिए किया जा सकता है।
